Western Red Alder is one of the major species handled by North Pacific. We maintain inventories in Portland, Oregon, averaging 500,000 BM, the largest inventory on the West coast.

Alder is a close or fine-grained hardwood similar to Cherry, Birch, and Maple. It has a density or hardness comparable to Appalachian Soft Maple. Western Alder is extremely uniform in its light tan or honey color, and there is no color difference between heartwood and sap wood. This makes Alder much easier to match and finish, even with clear "fruitwood" finishes that require no stain, because kiln-dried Alder presents no problems with sap, mineral streaks, dark color, or stain. It features a light pattern which adds to its popularity for printing and matching Alder solids with many species of veneers without bleaching.¹

Alder is ideally suited for cabinets, fine furniture, and furniture frames due to its workability. Its many unique characteristics combine to make it unlike any other wood in the world.

In data compiled from industry-recognized tests conducted by the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory. Alder rates as the most consistently workable hardwood across all categories. Alder received the highest ratings in character interest, machining and joint strength. Its subtle grain pattern and its ability to evenly accept a variety of finishes make it an ideal substitute for many more expensive, less workable hardwoods.

Random length is generally 8' to 10' with width to 10" and thickness of 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 8/4, 10/4, and 12/4. Available in S2S, and customer millwork in S4S, cut stock, turning stock and laminated stock.¹
